From the mind of New York Times bestseller, Lambda Award Winning author, and Bram Stoker nominee Christopher Rice comes a harrowing new supernatural thriller that will hook readers to the final page.
The dark history of Spring House, a beautifully restored plantation mansion on the outskirts of New Orleans, has long been forgotten. But something sinister lurks beneath the soil of the old estate.
After heiress and current owner Caitlin Chaisson is witness to her husband’s stunning betrayal at her birthday party, she tries to take her own life in the mansion’s cherished gazebo. Instead, the blood she spills awakens dark forces in the ground below. Chaos ensues and by morning her husband has vanished without a trace and his mistress has gone mad.
Nova, daughter to Spring House’s groundskeeper, has always suspected that something malevolent haunts the old place, and in the aftermath of the birthday party she enlists Caitlin’s estranged best friend, Blake, to help her get to the bottom of it. The pair soon realizes that the vengeance enacted by this sinister and otherworldly force comes at a terrible price.

That’s what guilty truly is, Scott realizes, a fishhook’s tug on the third or fourth minute of every happy moment.

Reading The Vines felt like watching an American horror/thriller movie. It’s thrilling but in some ways you get an idea of what’s going to happen although it still made me curious about a few things and it pulled in something unexpected for me.

I’ve never read anything by Christopher Rice but this sure was interesting. The Vines had an attention grabbing start. Caitlin witnessed her husband, Troy, betraying her on her own home during her own birthday party. She decides to take her own life where things started going into something totally unexpected – vines came out from the ground, chased her husband until he mysteriously vanished.

I grabbed this book because of my interest in thriller but it gave me more. The Vines is a pretty good read. It started off with a very thrilling opening scene to a very interesting history behind the Spring House to digging for the truth about an old murder.

The best thing I like about The Vines is how masterfully everything is connected. The Vines has several POVs and it’s nothing to be scared of. It’s not confusing in any way. In fact, it was a really great way of showing the different effects of Troy’s death. There’s Caitlin who was overpowered by this astounding power she discovered; Nova, daughter of the Spring House’s groundskeeper, who saw what happened the night Troy vanished; there’s Blake, Caitlin’s childhood friend, who’s more than willing to get at the bottom of things (not only of the Spring House’s mystery but John Fuller’s death); and a few more which makes the story just even more engaging and intriguing.

The climax was a real page turner wherein things just started going unexpected. True, I mentioned that this is like one of those horror movies wherein you get an idea of what’s going to happen next and that’s just what’s good about The Vines. I thought I knew how it’ll end but as things were just going through the road I expected it to take, it surprised me with unexpected turn of events which led to that really unpredictable ending.

What I Like: (1) the conventional horror style writing, (2) the multiple POVs, (3) how everything that’s happening and has happened is connected, (4) the unexpected twists

What I Didn’t Like: (1) how some parts of the story are quite unimaginative for me, (2) how the twist turned out a bit boring
