Even the darkest secrets can’t stay buried forever…
Five figures gather round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood …
Years later, a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders which shock the Black Country.
But when human remains are discovered at a former children’s home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. D.I. Kim Stone fast realises she’s on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.
As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it’s too late?

Kim said nothing. Much as they wished to, they knew they were incapable of saving the whole world - but sometimes you just had to deal with what was right in front of you.

Silent Scream is thrilling crime fiction that really made me think. and think. and think. and failed.

After getting hook to the Cuckoo's Calling, I thought maybe I needed to read more crime fiction. While I was able to read a couple more mystery-thriller, nothing really beats the excitement you get from reading crime-fiction with a detective digging through things.

Silent Scream features a brand new detective, Detective Inspector Kim Stone. She works based on what she thinks she should do (regardless of what people think she should do) and I'll tell you this, she does things her own way.

The book started with a flashback that really sets off the atmosphere of the story. Somehow it did set it for me. I knew that things wold get dark, murders will happen, and a nice amount of suspense will be involve. But the thing is the first half literally didn't excite me. It wasn't bad, it was more of an 'okay' thing for me. There were investigations and a bulk of detective sniffing around. I think one of the things this book excels in is how much it follows police procedure in investigation (or at least that's how I assume they should be). On a side note, this is the first time that I've read a crime fiction wherein the MC is an actual detective, not just a detective for hire or a mere character on the side who just wind up or got involve in the case.

The book slowly became engaging for me come almost half the book. There were a lot of things going on and they were piling up. So here's the thing, there were two things D.I. Kim is dealing with: the murder of the headmistress and the human remains found Crestwood, a burned down children's home. Digging for what happened to the human remains at Crestwood is what will help solve the murder of the headmistress. It's all an interesting mix up - related crimes being dug up on in a thrilling pace.

D.I. Kim is a very interesting detective to be with. She's serious about her work. She's good at it and the case she handled here personally affected her. Not in an overly personal way, more like she feels for those involved that she's not just doing it as her job, but as something that will give herself a rest. For me, Kim is a very emotional detective and while it's not something very good in her work, it's something that made her very engaging. She's got this dark, sad past that I'm pretty interested to get more into.

The ending definitely caught my off guard. I've been looking into the clues, checking all the people involve. I had my hunches. I've guessed a few mysteries before and I have to admit that I wasn't able to fully guess this one. The revelation was very thrilling, action-packed even. It's something I can even say as unputdownable. I was gripping my ereader as I read through the final chapters. It was a mixture of both expected and not-so expected moments.

Overall, Silent Scream is a well thought of mystery. It was quite engaging and very well written. It involves a very good detective that you'll really be interested to know. It also involves secondary characters (Kim's Team) that are quite memorable. AND while Kim is quite emotional, I have to admit that I love that about her :) Silent Scream is certainly a recommended book for those who love thrilling crime fiction that will keep you guessing.
